The
moral of the story 1st:
Always turn off and stop the garden tractor or riding lawn mower
before getting off of it.
Jim knows this first hand.
One night the temperatures were predicted in the -20º range.
We decided to put some cars and tractors in the
shop.
It was already quite cold and dark and many of the vehicles wouldn't
start. Using his
John Deere 140
with dual wheels, Jim would pull one
thing after another into the shop, moving quickly. As he was
getting on and off the
garden tractor
repeatedly, his last dismount was too careless. The still
moving wheels caught the front
of his foot and pulled the foot and his leg backwards so the wheel
was climbing up his leg. The 140 was actually running over him
and he couldn't get free. Jim managed to reach over the
tractor and grab the hydro lever and back the tractor back down his
leg and off of him. He spent about 6 weeks on crutches with a broken
ankle.
This is an older tractor and doesn't have an operator-presence
system. This is a switch in the seat that automatically kills the
engine when the you are not in the seat. If your tractor does not
have this feature, turn the engine off before leaving the seat.
